What is a sewer and drain video camera inspection?

A sewer and drain video camera inspection is a type of inspection that allows you and your plumber to accurately see the problems that lie inside of your plumbing sewer system.

During the inspection, the plumber inserts a camera on a line through the homes cleanout or by pulling the toilet. The camera is equipped with high-intensity lights, which illuminate the interior walls and sensors that allow us to locate the problem. The camera head transmits live video and the distance as it travels through the plumbing to a video monitor which enables the plumbing contractor to evaluate the condition of the pipes.

When should I get a sewer camera inspection?

A sewer camera inspection is a great way to start preventative maintenance. Because drain lines usually become clogged, deteriorate over time, and need maintenance eventually, it is essential to camera inspect your lines to help alleviate future problems.

A visual inspection can also provide valuable information during a home inspection for a prospective buyer. A camera can identify whether there are maintenance issues with the plumbing. Potential problems include cracked, corroded, collapsed or constricted pipes. A prospective buyer and seller can determine if the plumbing requires immediate repair.

Although underground pipes consist of resilient materials, they can crack or develop clogs due to accidents, age or tree roots. Tree roots growing into sewer lines is a common problem. Roots crawl into tiny openings and expand in the sewer line, latching on to other debris that typically cause backups. Inspecting underground plumbing requires cameras and other special equipment. A sewer camera provides easy access to pipes and drains. It enables the plumber to inspect the pipes within a concrete slab or buried beneath the ground without the expense or inconvenience of digging.
